How do solar panels work?
Solar is a renewable source of energy and is suitable for many properties, even those that may think they do not get enough sunlight to make them produce enough. Here’s how solar PV panels work:
- Consists of multiple cells made from semi conducting materials, which create electricity when light shines upon them.
- The electricity created is direct current (DC) and has to be converted by an inverter to alternating current (AC) so it is suitable for use in the home.
- The electricity created can be used, stored in a battery, or exported to the grid.
- Solar panels will still generate electricity on gloomy days as they require light, not necessarily direct sunlight, in order to work.
- The brighter the light, the higher ther electricity output.
Why has the Solar Scheme been set up?
Solar panels capture the energy from daylight and convert it to electricity that can be used to power your home. Installing solar panels will give homes the opportunity to generate their own renewable energy and contribute to the drive to cut carbon emissions.
Funding is about more than just eco concerns though, with the rapidly increasing cost of energy putting more and more households at serious risk of fuel poverty. Installing solar will help homes with a low Energy Performance Certificate banding improve their home’s energy efficiency and bring a reduction in their demand on the National Grid and therefore their bills. With solar, you’ll see savings for many years to come and play your part in helping the environment.
